A single-wall stove pipe should be kept about three times its diameter away from combustible material, while a double-wall pipe can be much closer. For Ø80 mm, this means around 40 cm, but the CE marking and manual are binding.

The difference lies in the heat on the outside. A single-wall pipe directly emits that heat, while a double-wall pipe has an insulation layer that keeps the shell cool enough to stay closer to wood. Therefore, the same situation with single-wall requires much more space.
In practice, you choose single-wall only for the short, visible section just above the stove, where there is enough free space. As soon as you go past wood, through a wall, or outside, switch to a double-wall pipe that can stay closer.
When in doubt, always use the largest specified distance, as the manual and CE marking are binding, not any general rule of thumb.

Wood doesn't need an open flame to ignite. Prolonged heat causes wood to off-gas, a process called pyrolysis. This lowers the ignition temperature slowly, sometimes to well below 150 degrees.
A beam right next to a single-wall pipe can slowly char over months and eventually ignite spontaneously. This slow self-ignition at low temperature is insidious, as you won't notice it for a long time.
Extra risk arises in areas where heat lingers. A pipe running through a tight enclosure or corner cools less effectively, causing surrounding wood to get warmer than expected. In such cases, ample distance or an insulated pipe is not a luxury.
The diameter plays a role in the calculation, as a wider pipe requires more free space. Therefore, first determine what diameter stove pipe you need before calculating the distance. Proper burning also keeps the pipe cooler, and thus safe burning with wood or pellets contributes to safety.
The legal basis differs per country and sometimes per municipality. In Belgium, installers refer to the NBN standards for flue gas discharge, which require each pipe to be installed according to the manufacturer's instructions and with the correct distances.
In the Netherlands, the Building Decree and NEN standards apply, with similar requirements. In both countries, the CE marking of the pipe remains the binding source for the minimum distance.
Your insurer may ask after damage whether everything was installed according to those regulations. Missing a certified pass-through or correct distance risks a coverage dispute.
