Heat and Efficiency: What Wins
Both types achieve 75 to 85 percent efficiency as modern Ecodesign units. The difference lies in heat output: a freestanding stove heats all around and responds quickly, while a built-in fireplace directs its heat more precisely and retains it longer in the surround. Many built-in models also have a fan that distributes heat to 2 or 3 adjacent rooms.
If after-heat is important, consider soapstone or cast iron for a freestanding unit: they emit heat for 2 to 6 hours after extinguishing. For a built-in fireplace, an accumulating surround provides the same effect.
The Renovation Involved
A freestanding stove can be installed in 1 day: unit, flue, floor plate, and test burn. A built-in fireplace requires more: a surround of masonry or fireproof panels, proper convection space and vents, and often an adapted flue. Expect 2 to 4 working days.

In a Well-Insulated or New-Build Home
In a nearly zero-energy building or a home with ventilation system D, choose a room-sealed unit with an external air supply of 80 to 100 millimeters. Otherwise, the stove draws combustion air from the room and counteracts the ventilation system.

A certified flue: without draft, neither built-in nor freestanding performs well.
