Wood stove maintenance and inspection

Our services

Wood stove maintenance and inspection

Regular maintenance keeps your wood stove safe, efficient and clean, especially with heavy use.

  • Complete service in 1 visit
  • Small parts replaced directly
  • Combined sweeping service available

Your wood stove deserves 1 thorough service per year

A wood stove has no electronics to sound an alarm: it wears down silently. The door rope slowly flattens, the firebricks crumble, the air sliders get dirty, and each of these minor defects costs efficiency and safety. The annual service visit of 120 to 200 euros addresses all of this in 1 visit, complete with a certificate.

Combined with sweeping the flue, you pay 160 to 250 euros for the complete installation, in 1 appointment and with both certificates. This keeps your efficiency at 75 to 85 percent year after year.

A wood stove never complains: it simply burns a little worse each year, until a proper service brings it back to peak performance.

How the maintenance service works

  1. Step 1: inspection and cleaning of the combustion chamber

We remove the firebricks and grate, clear away ash and soot down to the steel, and inspect the firebox for deformation or rust. Hairline cracks in the bricks are normal, but crumbling bricks are replaced with sets ranging from 30 to 80 euros. The ash grate and ash pan are also serviced, as a clogged grate chokes airflow from underneath.

  2. Step 2: door rope, glass, and seals

Using the paper test, we check the door seal rope at 4 points. A worn rope costing 15 to 40 euros is replaced immediately, along with the glass seal around the window. This ensures the stove closes airtight again and the glass stays clear.

  3. Step 3: flue pipe, air controls, and draught

We clean the connecting pipe internally, ensure the air sliders operate smoothly, and perform a draught measurement to confirm the stove and chimney perform perfectly together. Any doubts about the flue itself are checked immediately with a camera inspection.

  4. Step 4: test burn, firing advice, and certificate

We perform a test burn, adjust combustion, and provide tailored advice for your wood type and burning habits. You receive your maintenance certificate immediately for your insurer and warranty requirements.

How does this differ from a pellet stove service?

With a pellet stove, maintenance revolves around the auger, fans, and electronics, whereas with a wood stove it focuses on mechanical wear parts: bricks, ropes, hinges, and sliders. That is precisely why servicing a wood stove requires the hands-on skill of a technician who knows what to look for, not a computer checklist. If you burn both appliance types, we combine the services in 1 visit, so you never need to hire 2 separate companies.

How much does wood stove maintenance cost?

A standalone service costs 120 to 200 euros, while a combined service including chimney sweeping costs 160 to 250 euros via our combi package. Small replacement parts such as a door rope costing 15 to 40 euros or individual bricks from 10 to 25 euros are replaced directly during the service, always after your price approval.

How often is maintenance required?

Once a year under normal usage. If you use the stove as primary heating with more than 6 cubic metres of wood per year, schedule a mid-season check of the rope and bricks. The flue itself should be swept annually via our certified chimney sweeping service.

Why the service pays for itself

An unserviced stove consumes 5 to 15 percent more wood. If you burn 6 cubic metres per winter at 100 to 130 euros per cubic metre, you effectively waste 30 to 120 euros every year due to a leaky door seal and clogged air passages. The service cost of 120 to 200 euros largely pays for itself in fuel savings alone.

On top of that, proper maintenance extends the lifespan of the appliance to 20 to 30 years, keeps the manufacturer warranty valid, and protects your insurance status. Do the math: 10 years without maintenance saves 1,500 euros on servicing, but easily costs double that in extra wood and repairs. You can review official maintenance guidelines via Flemish regional maintenance regulations.

Common situations

If you bought a home with an existing wood stove, have a full service and flue check performed before the first fire: you never know when it was last maintained. If the stove sat unused for years, we pay extra attention to moisture, rust, and bird nests in the flue.

For holiday homes and rentals, we schedule servicing between guest stays, while high volume users can opt for a brief mid-season check of ropes and bricks. Let us know the brand and model beforehand so we have the correct ropes and bricks ready in our service van.

Signs that maintenance is urgently needed

Do not wait until next year if the glass turns black within 1 or 2 days, the flame flickers constantly on the lowest setting, the door no longer closes tightly, or you smell smoke in the room. Each of these signals points to air leaks or a dirty flue, both of which severely reduce efficiency.

If you are unsure, send us a photo: we will give an honest opinion on whether it is urgent or can wait until your planned service. Read more background in our article on stove glass turning black.

What you can do yourself between service visits

Empty the ash pan before the ash bed exceeds 2 centimetres, burn only dry wood with less than 20 percent moisture content, and clean the glass weekly using damp kitchen paper dipped in cold ash. Handy DIYers can replace a door rope using our step by step door seal guide or swap firebricks with our firebrick replacement guide. If you prefer a single professional partner, let us handle it during your service via our seal replacement service.

Craftsmanship by experts

Bricks, seals and air vents are evaluated by experienced technicians, not a quick checklist.
