Why those bricks are there
The firebrick lining protects the steel walls against direct flames and reflects heat back into the firebox. This keeps the combustion temperature high, ensuring an efficiency of 75 to 85 percent and a clean burn. Burning wood without bricks means: less heat output, more soot, and eventually a burnt-out stove body.
Fireclay or vermiculite
Hairline cracks are normal, crumbling is not: replacement is urgent only when raw steel is exposed.
When to replace firebricks
Pieces start crumbling or fall loose into the firebox.
A crack widens beyond 2 to 3 millimetres or runs completely through the brick.
The bare steel is visible behind or underneath a brick.
The stove produces noticeably less heat or soot builds up faster than usual.
If in doubt, simply finish the burning season: as long as the steel stays covered, a cracked brick can easily last for months. Order the replacement set in the meantime, and replacing them later takes barely 20 to 30 minutes.
How to replace firebricks in 5 steps
Allow the wood stove to cool down completely and remove the grate and ash pan.
Remove the bricks in order: first the baffle plate, then the side bricks, then the rear wall. Take a picture beforehand to ensure you know how everything fits back together.
Vacuum the firebox clean and inspect the exposed steel for rust or warping.
Install the new bricks in reverse order without forcing them: they should fit loosely with 1 to 2 millimetres of expansion room.
If needed, saw vermiculite boards to size using a handsaw, and run the first fire gently at half capacity.
How long do firebricks last
Fireclay bricks last 8 to 15 years, while vermiculite lasts 5 to 10 years, but your burning habits make a big difference. Placing logs gently instead of tossing them protects the lining, and avoiding stove overheating reduces wear.

Important tips to remember
Order according to stove make and model, or use the old brick as a template.
Never use mortar or fire cement: the bricks must expand freely with heat.
Wear a dust mask when cutting vermiculite boards.
Inspect the door seal rope and grate during the same maintenance session.
Never use standard house bricks or floor tiles, as they shatter at 600 to 800 degrees.
