First: are you still allowed to buy a wood stove in Belgium?
Yes. There is no ban on wood stoves in Flanders. However, the European Ecodesign directive applies since January 1, 2022: new appliances must achieve at least 75 percent efficiency and emit a maximum of 40 milligrams of particulate matter per cubic meter. In Brussels, installing a non compliant second hand appliance is banned since 2025.

The 7 checks before you buy
Heat output: calculate 1 kilowatt per 8 to 10 square meters in a moderately insulated home, and 1 kilowatt per 15 to 20 square meters in a well insulated home. Choosing a stove that is too large leads to smouldering, which causes soot build up.
Efficiency: select 75 percent or higher, with top appliances reaching 80 to 85 percent.
Ecodesign certificate: request the declaration of conformity, which is mandatory for every stove sold.
Material: steel heats up quickly, while cast iron and soapstone radiate warmth for hours after the fire goes out.
Connection: 150 to 180 millimeter diameter, top or rear outlet, and an external air supply for well insulated homes.
