Wood Stove Smoking Indoors: Causes

Wood Stove Smoking Indoors: Causes

Written by Dries Nijs2 min read

Houtkachel rookt naar binnen: oorzaken – Een houtkachel die naar binnen rookt heeft 1 van 7 oorzaken: koud kanaal, onderdruk, vervuiling of nat hout. Met directe acties en de structurele fix.

Wood Stove Smoking Indoors: What's Behind It

Almost always 1 of 7 causes: cold flue, negative pressure from extractor or ventilation, too short or blocked flue, bad weather, wrong cap, or wet wood. If smoke persists, stop using the stove and ventilate immediately, as smoke also means carbon monoxide.

First turn off the extractor and open a window, then look for the cause.

A wood stove smoking indoors almost always has 1 of 7 causes: a cold flue, negative pressure in the house, a too short or blocked flue, bad weather, a wrong cap, or too wet wood. If you smell smoke persistently indoors, stop using the stove and ventilate: smoke also means carbon monoxide.

Below you will find immediate actions for now, the 7 causes with solutions, and the distinction between a one-time and a structural problem.

Do This Immediately

  • Temporarily turn off or set the extractor and mechanical ventilation to the lowest setting.

  • Open a window slightly in the same room as the stove.

  • Fully open the air supply of the stove and close the door.

  • If smoke continues: let the fire burn out under control and do not continue using the stove.

  • Hang a CO detector costing 20 to 40 euros in the room if there isn't one already.

Smoke indoors is never just a nuisance: where smoke enters, carbon monoxide enters too.

How to Test the Draft in 30 Seconds

Before lighting, hold a burning match or incense stick in the open stove door. If the flame or smoke is clearly drawn in and upwards, the draft is good. If the smoke lingers or enters the room, preheat the flue for 5 to 10 minutes with a firelighter.

If you feel a cold airflow downwards with your hand in the cold firebox, the column is full of cold air and preheating is not an option but a necessity.

One-Time or Structural

One-Time, No Panic

  • Only in foggy or windless weather, and never otherwise.

  • Only during the first 10 minutes of a cold start.

  • Only when the extractor was accidentally on.

  • After one season without sweeping, resolved after sweeping.

Structural, Get It Checked

  • With every use, even with dry wood and without the extractor.

  • Smoke smell lingering hours after extinguishing.

  • Visible tar or soot stains around the connection or on the chimney wall.

  • A flue shorter than 4 meters or with more than 2 bends.

If It Keeps Happening

Then the problem lies within the flue itself: too short, too wide, too cold, or damaged. A camera inspection will reveal this and costs 100 to 200 euros, often deducted from the repair cost. What is possible then, you can read in the chimney renovation price overview.

If the problem occurs with a pellet stove, read what to do when smoke returns indoors. Meanwhile, improve the basics with the Swiss method of lighting and tests to recognize dry wood. More about healthy indoor burning is on the Flemish government page on indoor burning.

Unsure about the flue? Schedule a chimney scan at home, and you'll know within the hour where the smoke is coming from. CO detectors and anti-downdraft caps are available in our webshop. Request a quote or advice and enjoy safe heating again.
