What is a wood central heating stove?

A wood central heating stove combines the atmosphere of a wood fire with the power of a central heating boiler. Part of the heat radiates directly into the room, while the rest is sent to your heating circuit via a water-based heat exchanger. The appliance thus feeds the radiators or underfloor heating in the rest of the house. Some models also offer an oven, bringing cooking and heating together in a single appliance.

What should you look for when choosing?

• Water-side output (kW-H₂O): this determines how much heat actually goes to your heating circuit and is at least as important as the total nominal output.
• DSA safety: many models are prepared for a thermal discharge valve that safely dissipates heat in the event of a fault in the heating circuit.
• Oven option: ideal for anyone looking for a traditional, versatile hearth.

Installation and advice

Installation is more complex than with an ordinary wood stove. In addition to the flue standard (in Belgium NBN B 61-002), the standards for solid-fuel central heating installations also apply. Correct sizing of the hydraulic circuit with an expansion vessel, safety valve and, where necessary, a hydraulic separator is essential.
